Who is an Alzheimer’s Care Home For?

Alzheimer’s is the most common type of dementia. Alzheimer’s affects memory, thinking and behaviour. Over time, symptoms usually become significant enough that they begin to make daily tasks more difficult.

An Alzheimer’s care home supports people living with this condition and will often care for people with others forms of dementia as well.

How Are Residents Supported in an Alzheimer’s Care Home?

There are numerous benefits to somebody with Alzheimer’s moving into a care home.

During the early stages of the condition, a residential care home could be the best option. At this stage, your loved one may not yet need specialist care and support. As Alzheimer’s progresses, switching to a dementia nursing care or specialist dementia care home is advised, as this will ensure they get the right level of care.

Many of the best dementia care homes have dedicated units for residents with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Along with experienced staff, these facilities may include sensory rooms, memory cafés, reminiscence rooms, special lighting and more.

In an Alzheimer’s care home, your loved one will be supported through:

  • Care and support from professional care staff 24 hours a day
  • Supervision to ensure they stay safe
  • Group activities and living with others for plenty of socialisation

Visiting your loved one rather than directly caring for them will allow you to enjoy time spent together, without any added pressure. As a family member, you can still provide support and influence their care.

Who Makes the Decision To Enter a Care Home?

When deciding whether or not to enter a care home, everyone involved should have a say. Ideally, it will be the decision of the person going into the care home.

Even if this person isn’t able to fully make any big decisions, you should still involve them where possible - this will help them feel valued and considered. Offering choices like these will also help them feel in control.

The decision to move into an Alzheimer’s care home is a really important one that shouldn’t be rushed. If your loved one lacks the mental capacity to know what’s in their best interests or struggles with communication then getting advice and support from a personal welfare deputy or a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) can help you make important decisions on their behalf.

A Health and Welfare LPA allows you to decide when your loved one should move into a care home, while a Property and Financial Affairs LPA will give you the legal power to make financial decisions for your loved one and pay for their care.

How to Find Alzheimer’s Care

To find the best Alzheimer’s care home for your loved one’s needs, the first step is to get a care needs assessment from your local council’s social services.

The local council will make recommendations about your loved one’s care. They’ll also conduct a financial assessment and may contribute towards some of the costs.

Once your loved one has been assessed, most care homes will either visit them at home (or in the hospital), or they’ll invite your loved one into the home for a visit.

While at the home, be sure to talk to the staff and manager to get a feel for the home. What are the facilities like? Are there activities for people with Alzheimer’s? Will your loved one be able to decorate their own room to make it feel more familiar?

Planning ahead will make choosing a care home easier as you’ll have more information surrounding your loved one’s preferences and personal wishes. A residential care home can offer personal care like washing and dressing, while a nursing home will have at least one qualified nurse on-site 24 hours a day.

The final decision of choosing the right care home should be left to your loved one, but be sure to let them know that you’re there to provide support and help along the way.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best environment for people living with Alzheimer’s?

Most people with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia benefit from better lighting within the home. This helps avoid confusion and reduces the risk of falls. Meanwhile, spending more time outdoors is always beneficial. Gardens offer fresh air, exercise and exposure to sunlight which is crucial for wellbeing.

Do Alzheimer’s patients get free care home fees?

In most cases, the person with a form of dementia like Alzheimer’s will be expected to pay the cost of their care home fees. You can apply for a needs assessment by social services, along with a financial assessment, through GOV.UK. Social services can also provide a list of care homes that meet the needs identified during the assessment.

When should a dementia patient go into a care home?

Somebody with dementia will require greater care and support as their condition progresses. There may come a time when they need to move into residential care. This decision should be made with the best interests of the person with dementia in mind. If they’re unable to make the decision themselves, then many carers, family members and friends will have a good idea as to what the person with dementia would want. The person with dementia should still be consulted about this decision where possible.

How do you prepare financially for Alzheimer’s?

To financially prepare for a loved one having Alzheimer’s, you should first organise your financial information, including pensions, bank names, account numbers and insurance information. You should then decide who will make decisions about property and health if the person with Alzheimer’s doesn’t have the mental capacity to do so themselves. Finally, you should collect information about how care will be paid going forward.
