What Is An Adult Day Care Centre?

Adult day care supports people who need extra care throughout the day - often for several hours at a time. This is provided within specialist adult day care centres, care homes or community buildings such as village halls.

One of the biggest draws of adult day care is the social opportunities and the range of activities visitors can take part in.

Along with these activities, older adults are also provided with additional care where needed, while family caregivers are given a break from their caregiving duties.

Some services are available in the evenings or at weekends, but the majority of adult day care centres operate Monday to Friday during daytime hours.

Age UK Day Centres

Age UK run day centres throughout the UK. These support older adults to be independent while providing plenty of opportunities for socialisation. They also put on various activities throughout the day, such as quizzes, gentle exercise, singing and painting.

At one of these day centres, you’ll also be served a hot lunch, along with snacks throughout the day.

Some offer additional care services as well, including assisted bathing and foot care.

Click the link above to find out what support is available near you. You can directly contact your nearest Age UK, or you can be referred to a day centre by a relative or your GP. You can also self-refer.

What Is Day Care Within A Care Home?

Day care within a care home is similar to the experience you’ll get in a specialist day care centre. The services offered are often suitable for people with greater care needs, such as people living with a form of dementia.

Many homes will create individualised activity plans for their day care members. These take into account personal interests and hobbies, to tailor activities to the likes of each individual. Many homes have an activity coordinator whose main role is to organise these amazing activities.

Other services offered often include companionship care and personal care where required.
