What Care and Support Is Given To People Living With Parkinson’s In a Care Home?

Many people stay at home when living with Parkinson’s, often after having their homes adapted so they remain safe, including installations like grab rails in bathrooms, adapted seating, and stair rails. However, as the condition progresses, you may find it easier to move into a care home. Limited mobility can make you increasingly prone to falls, and you may also find it difficult to keep up with household tasks and look after yourself.

A care home that specialises in Parkinson’s care will support people to remain independent while assisting them with things like mobility, personal care, medication management, and physiotherapy.

you or your loved one will also have a specialised care plan created. This plan will include specific care needs, medication requirements, dietary requirements, favourite activities and hobbies, and any other preferences.

According to Dementia UK, around one-third of people diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease go on to develop dementia. Many care homes have carers trained in specialist dementia care methods, including calming techniques and reminiscence therapy.

When picking a care home for Parkinson’s, consider whether the care team has specific expertise and the facilities they offer. If your or your loved one’s care needs increase, will the home still be able to provide the necessary care, or will you then be required to move homes? Ideally, you’d find a home capable of providing the required level of care throughout your or your loved one’s care journey, so moving isn’t necessary.

Advice From Lottie’s Care Experts To Find a Parkinson’s Care Home

Usually, Parkinson’s care falls under the care given in a residential care home. These homes offer support to people needing extra support on a daily basis to remain safe and happy, including with personal hygiene and mobility-related tasks like using the bathroom, washing and bathing, getting dressed, and getting in and out of bed.

For the most part, a more specialised form of care is only needed when you or your loved one is living with a rarer form of Parkinson’s disease.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do people living with Parkinson’s go into care homes?

As Parkinson’s progresses and your care needs increase, you may need additional support, such as in a care home, where care is often available 24/7. People living with Parkinson’s often go into care homes when:

  • They’re no longer able to manage daily tasks
  • When they find it challenging to look after their personal care and have limited mobility
  • When they experience symptoms like hallucinations or dementia
Do people living with Parkinson’s have to pay for care?

People living with Parkinson’s usually have to pay for their own care. Whether you pay is worked out through a financial assessment. You’ll pay if the value of your savings and income (and assets such as your home if you’re going into a care home) are above your country’s upper threshold. Your local authority will pay some or all of the care costs if this value is below the lower threshold or between the two thresholds. Some are eligible for NHS funding, such as NHS continuing healthcare, where the NHS will entirely arrange and fund your care, whether that’s at home or in a care home.

Do people living with Parkinson’s require 24/7 care?

Whether someone needs 24/7 care depends on the stage of their condition and their individual needs. People with early-stage Parkinson’s care often live independently for many years, benefitting from a few hours of care per week. Whereas, people with advanced Parkinson’s may need 24/7 care, either in a care home or at home.
