Now, as they prepare for the Women’s World Cup Final this Sunday (20th August), care home residents across the country have shared their heartfelt well wishes and advice for taking home the grand prize.

Care home residents have shared their advice for the Lionesses ahead of the World Cup final this Sunday:

  • ‘You make us proud’ - Jean (82 years old)

  • ‘Good work girls, we are proud of you’ - Angelica (97 years old)
  • ‘Well done Lionesses, bring it home’ - Nicolette (93 years old)
  • ‘Good luck Lionesses and keep it up’ - Brenda (80 years old)

Belmont Lodge in Chigwell

Residents at Belmont Lodge Care Home in Chigwell have been enjoying the football fever this summer, and 99-year-old Patricia wants the Lionesses to know “Whatever the outcome, you’ve done your country proud”.

Angelica, 97 years old, shares “Soak up the atmosphere and use it to your advantage!”. Angelica has also said how proud she is of the Lionesses.

Dawn Harrison, Activities Manager at Belmont Lodge has said that “It’s been wonderful seeing our residents getting into the football spirit. Wednesday’s goal-fest against Australia was magical, the residents are still talking about it this morning and there’s a distinct buzz and excitement in the air ahead of Sunday’s big final. Come on Lionesses, do us proud!”

The Lionesses have full support from 97-year-old Abu, another resident at Belmont Lodge Care Home. He shares practical advice to score an early goal to settle the nerves. Abu also believes the Lionesses are going to win as he shares “It’s coming home, we are so proud of you. Good luck ladies”.

Priory Court in Epsom

Priory Court Care Home in Epsom are also getting into the football spirit and is preparing for a cinematic showing for the final.

“We have some residents that have been watching the Lionesses throughout the World Cup games. They are very proud of the ladies and wish them all the best in the final. We will have the game being played in the lounges and other areas of the home, including our fantastic cinema room to get a better view of the game. It makes us proud to watch the Lionesses do so well”, shares Fiona Smith, Lifestyle Lead at Priory Court Care Home.

79-year-old Michael, a resident at Priory Court Care Home, is supporting the Lionesses and shares, “I knew they were going to be better than the men”. Maurice (83 years old) is also in agreement and shares “We can do it”.

Anisha Grange in Billericay

The advice and well wishes for the Lionesses doesn’t stop there! Residents at Anisha Grange Care Home in Billericay have also come together to wish the Lionesses the best of luck. 93-year-old Beryl shares “Just keep playing the way you have been in the finals. Try not to give the ball away”.

Margaret (91 years old) tells the Lionesses to “Keep positive”. Meanwhile, 92-year-old John has full confidence in the Lionesses as he simply shares “Win the match”.

Admiral Court in Leigh-on-Sea

Finally, 99-year-old Joan, a resident at Admiral Court Care Home in Leigh-on-Sea shares her excitement for Sunday’s match: “You are a credit to the country, absolutely amazing and the best ever. I hope they win the final, I am sure they will as they have me voting for them. COME ON ENGLAND.”


The Lionesses have reignited a spark in care home residents across the country

Group sports are a great way to form new friendships - no matter your age, and it’s great to hear the funny, inspiring and heartwarming tips our residents have for the Lionesses as they prepare for the World Cup Final on Sunday.

What’s more, for many older generations, watching the Lionesses play in the Women's World Cup is profound, as it acts as a powerful testament to the progress we've made in breaking down gender barriers and recognising the strength and determination of not only female athletes but women in all aspects of society.
