What people say about Southlands

Highlighting top-rated reviews

my mum has been a resident at Southlands for the past four years - during this time she has deteriorated immensely - the staff in the home do liaise with myself at all levels regarding the care of mum what measures are in place to make life more comfortable for her, we have a very open relationship and I know mum is happy there in her own way - she is unable to communicate with anyone - but the staff know her well and know how to provide the best care for her. Her dignity and privacy is at the forefront of all they do which gives me peace of mind for her wellbeing. Being a carer isn't a job its a passion and i truly believe the staff at southlands do have a passion for what they do. I cannot praise it enough. While no one wants to think of their loved one going into care - sometimes its the only option - the staff and team at Southlands have made the transition as easy as it could be and i am very very grateful.

I had to urgently find a care home with nursing for my father in January because his previous care home realised they could no longer meet his needs, despite promising 12 months earlier that they could and that he did not need to be in a nursing home. He is 89 and has advanced Parkinson's disease, so he is now a major fall risk. I visited two places which had a bed available. Both of them impressed me. One was BUPA Southlands in Harrogate. I decided to move Dad there because Susan, the home manager, told me that this year Southlands was going for an 'Outstanding' rating from BUPA's internal inspectors. She says they are more demanding than the CQC inspectors. Dad has been at Southlands for almost six months. They have been brilliant and it is such a relief. I live an hour away so I cannot just pop in, but I can rest easy knowing he is so well cared for. The staff are wonderful, both carers and nurses. It feels like a community - a big family and a real team. The affection they have for my dad is marvellous - several of them have told me how much they love him. They understand his condition, they keep him as active as possible, both mentally and physically, and they get on with things professionally and effectively. I've had direct experience of three other care homes, all of which have been short-staffed and overstretched. They have promised much and not delivered what they should have. Southlands is the benchmark - they show what is possible with committed leadership, proper funding, a healthy culture, and a genuine commitment to residents and their families. Thank you, Southlands team - you have been life savers. I'm tempted to mention names (you know who you are) but I won't, because I don't want to miss anyone out.

The staff are very knowledgeably and friendly and are willing to go the extra mile. The front of house staff are exceedingly friendly and welcoming which gives you a good impression when you walk in. There are lots of activities going on and residents are encouraged to participate.

My dad had been at BUPA Southlands nursing home for two years before he sadly passed away peacefully on the 29th January this year. I wanted to post a review in his memory as I know how happy he was during his stay there. If you are looking for somewhere to place a loved one you couldn’t choose a better place than Southlands. I found the staff were kind, gentle and caring, nothing was ever too much trouble and they treated dad like an extended member of their family. In the two years dad was in the care of Southlands I never once felt anxious or worried about him as I knew he was in good hands, I can honestly say I did not feel this way when dad was in his previous care home. Big thank you to all the team who are brilliant and do a very difficult job.
